Event Details

One of the eighty grand affairs at the TD Halifax Jazz Festival, July 8-16, 2011.

The Bad Plus (NYC/MLPS)
contemporary jazz / classical

“Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring” — As the title suggests, these intrepid music voyagers will reinterpret one of the most famous ballets ever written. Making its world debut 98 years ago this May, Stravinsky’s ballet caused a riot (or so the legend goes) in Paris due to the shockingly primal and violent style of the dancing and heavily rhythmic nature of the score, which drew closely upon Russian folk music with harmonies that were downright dissonant. Working on this Duke University/Lincoln Center commission for more than a year before its premiere, the band radically transforms the music as it bridges classical and jazz and rock. The music will be accompanied by a multimedia presentation by architect Cristina Guadalupe and filmmaker Noah Hutton.

Personnel: Reid Anderson (bass), Ethan Iverson (piano) and David King (drums)

Yaron Herman TrIo (Paris)
contemporary jazz / pop

Born in Tel Aviv and educated at a young age under the famous Opher Brayer, Yaron Herman earned a reputation as a piano prodigy early on. After lecturing on his theory of ‘Real Time Composition’ for a stint at the Sorbonne and multiple tours playing some of the world’s most prestigious halls, Herman is a bona fide veteran. More recently, he’s found some crossover notori- ety for his reinterpretations of Beethoven, Britney Spears and Nirvana; however he is an equally accomplished composer. The original pieces on his most recent work, Follow The White Rabbit, suggest a deepening of Herman’s maturity as a writer and showcase some of his finest playing in a group setting. Credit for this growth is also due to trio bassist Chris Tordini and drummer Tommy Crane. Don’t miss this opportunity to see one of the world’s premier jazz pianists in this exciting new phase of his career.

Personnel: Yaron Herman (piano), Tommy Crane (drums) and Matt Brewer (double bass)
